Why these three ingredients?
This water-free recipe creates a concentrated balm. Each ingredient contributes to its melting texture and the comforting feeling it leaves on the skin.
Shea
Shea butter provides a rich texture and helps to soften dry hands.
Coconut oil
Coconut oil melts on contact with the skin and makes the balm easy to apply.
Sweet almond
Sweet almond oil lightens the preparation and leaves skin soft and supple.
Homemade hand balm recipe
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons of shea butter
- 1 tablespoon of virgin coconut oil
- 1 tablespoon of sweet almond oil
Step-by-step preparation
- Clean and thoroughly dry the jar, bowl, and utensils. The presence of water could reduce shelf life.
- Gently melt the shea butter and coconut oil in a double boiler.
- Remove from heat, then add the sweet almond oil. Mix until the preparation is uniform.
- Place the mixture in the refrigerator until it becomes opaque and semi-firm, without letting it harden completely.
- Whip until creamy, then transfer the balm to the clean, dry jar.
Usage tip: A small amount is sufficient. Warm the balm between your fingers, then massage into hands, cuticles, elbows, or feet.
Can the recipe be customized?
You can add a few drops of vitamin E to help slow down the oxidation of the oils. Vitamin E is an antioxidant: it does not replace a preservative.
An essential oil can also be added, strictly adhering to the dosage recommended by its manufacturer. For sensitive skin, during pregnancy, or for a product intended for children, it is preferable to keep the recipe without essential oil.
How to store a homemade balm?
Store the closed jar away from heat, light, and humidity. Always use clean, dry fingers. If your home is very warm, the refrigerator will prevent the balm from melting, but its texture will become firmer.
Prepare small quantities and replace the balm if its smell, color, or texture changes.
